Basic Controls, Navigation, and Safety
Learn how to navigate the touchscreen, adjust resistance, switch modes, and use the built-in safety features.
The touchscreen
The VOLTRA I touchscreen is your primary control interface. From the home screen, you can select training modes, adjust resistance, configure settings, and view real-time data during sets.
The screen handles gym environments well — sweat doesn't corrode it, and it wipes clean easily. For extra protection in high-traffic facilities, a frosted screen protector (available separately) handles moisture better than bare glass.
Adjusting resistance
Two ways to change resistance on the device:
Swipe mode — swipe up or down on the weight display to adjust quickly across the full 5–200 lb range. Recent updates let you toggle between 1, 5, or 10 lb increment steps for faster changes.
+/- buttons — tap for precise 1 lb adjustments.
You can also adjust resistance remotely through the Beyond+ app — particularly useful when VOLTRA I is mounted overhead or in a position where reaching the screen mid-set isn't practical.
Selecting a training mode
Modes can be changed directly on the unit's screen or via the Beyond+ app. From the home screen, tap the mode icon to cycle between the available options:
Weight Training
Resistance Band
Damper (Velocity)
Isokinetic
Isometric
Advanced modes like Custom Curves are accessible through the app. For a full breakdown of each mode, see the Mastering VOLTRA I Modes & Features section.
Physical buttons
VOLTRA I has two physical buttons. The left button above the screen controls power on/off. The right button on the handle assists in unmounting.
If the screen ever fails during a session, you can force a complete shutdown:
Quick click once.
Long press.
Quick click once.
Long press.
This sequence powers the device down completely regardless of screen status. If VOLTRA I is previously paired with Beyond+, you can also adjust resistance from the app within Bluetooth range — but Beyond Power strongly recommends returning the unit for repair rather than continuing to use it with a failed screen.
Cable handling
Always maintain a firm grip on the handle and stand in a stable position during training. A few guidelines:
Don't let the cable retract uncontrolled — use the stop button if needed.
VOLTRA I's ultra-low inertia design provides smooth resistance, reducing jerkiness.
At the end of a session, gently retract the cable fully before powering off.
Regularly check the cable for signs of fray or wear.
Built-in safety features
VOLTRA I includes several safety systems that run automatically. Most are on by default and should be left enabled unless you have a specific reason to change them.
Assist Mode
Active by default. When VOLTRA I detects you're struggling to complete a rep, it automatically reduces resistance to help you finish safely. Think of it as a built-in spotter.
You can choose a duration for when the assist kicks in. Shorter durations (1–2s) provide quicker intervention; longer durations (4–5s) allow more time for grinding through a rep before assistance kicks in.
Find it under: Settings > Safety > Assist Mode.
Slip Detection
On by default. When training with over 30 lbs, if you accidentally loosen the handle or accessories, VOLTRA I proactively slows down cable speed. This prevents the cable from snapping back if you lose your grip on a heavy set. Leave this on unless you have a specific reason to disable it.
Unload Alerts
On by default (Settings > Sound & Vibration). Plays sound and vibration warnings before resistance is unloaded due to inactivity. This warns you before the cable goes slack between sets, so an attached handle or bar doesn't drop unexpectedly. Worth keeping enabled, especially when using heavier accessories.
Auto Load
Lets you get into position more easily before your set begins. The cable stays light while you set up, then engages full resistance when you're ready.
In Weight Training mode, long-press the weight tile.
Pull cable to desired training position and follow the on-screen countdown to stabilize.
Auto Unload
Drops the resistance either as you reach a holding time target or rep target, so you can finish a set without worrying about returning the cable to the starting point.
Tap the Auto Unload icon in Weight Training.
Turn on Auto Unload.
Set either Holding Time or Target Reps to trigger the unload.
Sport Mode
Found under Settings > Advanced. Controls maximum weight and cable speed limits. Keep this disabled initially while you learn the system — the factory default caps the weight limit at 100 lbs to protect new users. Enable it later when you're comfortable and ready for full performance response.
Child Protection
Can be toggled on in safety settings (Settings > Safety > Child Protection) to prevent unauthorized use. When enabled, a long press is required to unlock the device.
Quick settings to configure before your first workout
Smart Pin — In Weight Training mode, Smart Pin saves up to three frequently used resistance levels for one-tap access between exercises. Tap again to edit saved weights.
Weight Adjustment Mode — Choose between Scroll (swipe to adjust) and Step (+/- buttons) depending on your preference.
Quick Adjust — Set increment size (1 lb, 5 lb, or 10 lb) for how much resistance changes per tap or swipe step.
Resistance Experience — Toggle between Normal and Intense. Intense provides a slightly sharper resistance feel at the start of each rep.
